Meta unveils its new smart glasses: augmented reality and AI explained at Meta Connect 2025

Meta, the company led by Mark Zuckerberg, has introduced its new smart glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban and Oakley, strengthening its strategy toward augmented reality and the metaverse. The announcement took place at Meta Connect 2025, where the company showcased how artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated into everyday devices.

Announced models

  • Ray-Ban Meta Display: feature a display on the right lens (HUD) to show notifications, translations, and real-time navigation. They include the Neural Band wristband, which allows gesture control through muscle signals.

  • Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2): an evolution of the popular smart glasses, with an improved camera, directional audio, more precise microphones, and up to 9 hours of battery life.

  • Oakley Meta Vanguard: designed for sports activities, water-resistant, with performance metrics and high-quality video recording.

Key features

  • Integrated AI: live translation, environment recognition, and instant responses.

  • Enhanced audio and cameras: multiple microphones and cameras up to 3K for photos and videos.

  • Voice and gesture control: interact without needing to use your phone.

  • Versatile design: available in sunglasses styles and with prescription lens options.

These features reinforce the vision of augmented reality glasses and bring them closer to the concept of Meta Orion glasses, an internal AR project in the long term.

Price and availability

  • Ray-Ban Display + Neural Band: starting at US$799.

  • Oakley Meta glasses: around US$499.

The initial launch will take place in the U.S. at the end of 2025, reaching Europe in 2026.

A smartphone replacement?

With these innovations, Meta aims for its smart glasses to take over many smartphone functions: receiving messages, navigation, real-time translation, recording content, and accessing the AI assistant. While they don’t yet fully replace the phone, they represent a solid step toward the complete integration of technology into everyday accessories.

They also join the Meta Quest VR glasses family, such as the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3, further strengthening the company’s ecosystem in augmented and virtual reality.

Conclusion

The new Ray-Ban x Meta glasses, presented at Meta Connect 2025, are not just a fashion accessory but a device that combines AI, connectivity, and design to anticipate the future of digital interaction. Their arrival brings opportunities, but also challenges regarding price, privacy, and battery life.

What’s certain is that Meta’s smart glasses announcement marks a key milestone: we are getting closer to leaving the smartphone behind as the sole hub of our digital lives.
